Industry standards play an important role in the selection and use of interconnection devices. Standards are primarily directed at performance and intermatability issues. Frequently, only standards-compliant components may be used in a system even though others are satisfactory in all other aspects for the application. Developing and writing industry standards for interconnections is a long and complex process with input from both users and suppliers.
